Gibbon Multimedia is owned and managed by Guy Gibbon. The company specialises in multimedia productions of birding field guides, and these have included the Pizzey and Knight Birds of Australia, Roberts Birds of Southern Africa, and RSPB Birds of Britain and Ireland. Publications include apps for Android and iPhone, and Windows PC editions. The unique feature of our publications is they can be used as either a book or as a bird list, with added sounds and photos, and an amazing range of functionality. We are constantly working at improving and upgrading our apps.
Guy Gibbon is a birder, wildlife sound recordist and multimedia publisher. Born and educated in Durban, South Africa, Guy began birdwatching as a youngster and sound recording while at university. He studied for a Bsc Civil Engineering at the University of Natal and worked for 15 years as a consulting and construction engineer. Every spare opportunity was however devoted to birding and sound recording, and Guy's first bird sound publications in 1981 and 1983 were driven by a desire to share his love of bird sounds. These early works were followed in 1991 by Southern African Bird Sounds, a comprehensive guide to over 900 species. The publication was a success, and Guy began working full time in the field of multimedia publishing. This has over the past 40 years led to nine bird sound publications, four Birds of Southern Africa videos, eight multimedia programs for PC, and a further eight mobile applications for PDAs, phones and tablets.
In 1996 Guy teamed up with the publishers of the Roberts Birds of Southern Africa books, to publish a multimedia edition. Since then the Roberts apps became a standard reference for birders in the region. Further collaborations have included the RSPB Birds of Britain and Ireland Interactive Edition in 2005, and the Pizzey and Knight Birds of Australia Digital Edition in 2013.
One of the first mobile birding publications was the Roberts Multimedia Birds of Southern Africa PDA Version in 2003. The move to mobile phones led to the Roberts VII Multimedia mobile editions in 2012 and the Pizzey and Knight Birds of Australia mobile editions in 2013.
Maintaining and supporting the mobile apps is now a full-time occupation and Guy is constantly seeking to improve and upgrade the apps.
